What Does the Check Engine Light Mean?
The Check Engine light is part of the vehicle’s On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system. Modern vehicles are equipped with internal computers that monitor engine performance including engine speed (RPMs), ignition timing, and the air to fuel ratio.
When one of these operations fall out of the specified parameters set by the vehicle’s manufacturer, or the vehicle experiences misfires, failed spark plugs, evaporative issues, or fuel mixtures running lean (too much oxygen versus fuel) or running rich (more fuel vs oxygen), the check engine light will come on.
A solid glow of the check engine light means that you should have your vehicle inspected soon. A check engine light could indicate that something as simple as needing to replace the gas cap or an internal component is struggling to perform properly.
However, if your check engine light is flashing, it means your vehicle is in serious condition and needs service immediately. In the case where a check engine light is blinking, avoid driving the vehicle and instead, have it towed to an automotive center right away.
Whether your vehicle’s check engine light is solid or flashing, don’t wait to get service. Ignoring the check engine light may cause further damage to the engine and its components and cause a loss of power.
Our Engine Repair Process
Engine repair procedures will involve many possible inspections and test procedures. As with any repair, we want to identify the cause of failure to repair the issue properly. Is it a lack of engine oil or coolant? Did a gasket or seal fail, causing a lack of fluid? The other concerns can be related to fuel or ignition problems that lead to other internal issues.
Once all external concerns have been evaluated on the vehicle, testing related to the engine’s internal operations begins. This testing can include things such as an engine compression test, cylinder leak down testing, chemical block test for possible head or head gasket failure, and inspection of all timing related components.
Once our technicians have identified the area of failure or concern, we can focus testing on that specific area of the vehicle. We are now able to prepare what our best course of action for engine repair will be. Many engine repairs on today’s cars and trucks can involve timing related issues with either chain or belt driven motors.
The next most common area of concern is cylinder head or cylinder head gasket failure. Lower engine failures have become much less common in today’s vehicles, however, with most lower engine failures, we would need to discuss engine replacement options.
Diesel Engine Repair Service
Diesel engine repair services are typically less frequent than their gas-engine counterparts, but they often have similar repairs. With any diesel engine repair, we need to identify what caused the failure. A lot of diesel engine troubles are related to injector pump failures and turbocharger issues which are external not internal.
As with any mechanical repair, our testing will first focus on what lead to the failure and what components were affected as a result of the failure. Once this is determined, we can then evaluate the best course for repair.
Just as in gas-powered engines, diesel engines also use compression tests to determine what the internal cylinder pressures are. With this information we can then best evaluate if there is a cylinder head concern or lower-end internal engine trouble. With any engine, once we have this information we can then prepare to move forward with solutions for repair.
