Vehicle Safety 101: Replacing Wiper Blades

During inclement weather such as rain, sleet or snow, you want your wiper blades to keep your windows clear. If you’re seeing a haze when you turn on your wipers, it’s probably time for a replacement. Most people don’t give a lot of thought to their windshield wipers, and some people wait until the blades are tattered and worn before getting a new set. The rain and snow aren’t the only elements that can wear out the rubber blades. The hot summer sun deteriorates the rubber, causing the blades to skip across the glass and not clean it properly.

Types of Wiper Blades

There are three different types of wiper blades, including the following:

  • Traditional bracket blades have a metal frame with multiple contact points to keep the blade in contact with the glass. These wiper blades are the least expensive, but they tend to collect snow or ice during winter conditions. Bracket blades don’t last as long as other types, but they are readily available.
  • Winter wiper blades are more functional for drivers who experience a lot of winter weather. The blade is encased in a protective rubber shell, which keeps the snow and ice off the wiper. Winter wipers last longer, but they are not as visually appealing as traditional wipers.
  • Premium-beam-style wiper blades have a modern and contemporary look, but they do tend to be more expensive than other types of blades. The beam blades are the newest technology in wiper blades and have the lowest level of noise while offering maximum cleaning power. If you have the budget, these are highly recommended for longevity and aerodynamics. Beam wipers are also called Euro-style, bracketless, frameless, or boneless.

You know it’s time to replace your wiper blades when you see:

  • Skipping
  • Streaking
  • Splitting

You may also hear the blades squeaking on the window. Generally, you should replace both wiper blades at the same time. When you install new wiper blades, make a habit to check your windshield wiper fluid to have enough liquid to remove bugs and grime when necessary.
