Q: How long have you been in the automotive repair industry?
A: I have been in this industry for just over 6 years but have been around the industry my whole life.
Q: How did you get your start?
A: My father owned his own auto body shop which eventually included auto repair. I spent a lot of time around the shop cleaning and trying to help and learn more about cars. I ultimately started working there as my first real job at the age of 15.
Q: What’s your favorite auto repair to complete?
A: My favorite repair is actually quite simple — the mass air sensor. This is my favorite service because once it’s replaced, it makes a huge difference. When the sensor is bad, the car idles very poorly, hesitates, and jerks during acceleration. Once it’s replaced, you feel like you’re driving a new car again. It’s an amazing transformation!
Q: What’s your favorite type of vehicle to make repairs on?
A: I would have to say BMWs because they have very complex components. Some shops may shy away from the amount of attention they require, but I like a challenge and am more than willing to take it on.
Q: What are the qualities a Sun Devil Auto technician possesses?
A: It all begins with training. There are multiple courses offered through Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and certifications that our technicians must obtain. Technicians must also have patience and excellent problem-solving skills to help identify uncommon or unusual vehicle troubles.
Q: What type of training do your technicians need to complete? What’s included in this training?
A: Our technicians are required to obtain ASE Certifications. Each technician should also be able to explain how a repair must be done, in detail, from start to finish. Our technicians also learn from each other. We pair our veteran technicians with newer technicians so that they learn from the best to become the best.
Q: What’s the most commonly asked question you get about automotive repair?
A: I am often asked how long I’ve been in the industry, do I enjoy working for Sun Devil Auto, and most often when vehicles are experiencing trouble, ‘why do cars have to break down?’ My best answer to the last question is because it’s a machine. Machines must be maintained in order to keep from breaking down.
Q: If you could dismiss one myth about automotive maintenance/repair, what would that be?
A: That cars are easy to diagnose because of their internal computers. While we wish it was that easy, it simply isn’t. For example, when the check engine light is on, we must use a scan tool to tell us what codes the computer has stored. The codes could represent a multitude of issues that require additional testing and diagnosis that the technician must find.
Q: What’s the number one tip you would provide to car owners about maintaining their vehicle?
A: The most important advice I could give would be to keep up with maintenance services at the proper intervals. Don’t wait until it’s too late. The key is preventative maintenance to prevent costly repairs down the road.
