How to Prepare Your Car for a Long Road Trip

A road trip can be a ton of fun. Whether you are going with friends or family, you can make a lot of great memories. One memory you do not want to have is being stranded on the side of the road because of a breakdown. Reduce the chances of that happening by taking care of a few things before you hit the road.

Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid needs to be changed after so many miles and can vary by manufacturer. Check your owner’s manual to see how often you should be getting the fluid changed. If you are fast approaching your next change, then it would be wise to get it taken care of prior to your departure.

Tire Pressure

Blown tires can be an inconvenience and could pose danger to yourself or other drivers. Make sure the tire pressure in all four tires is adequate before hitting the road for any length of time. Inflate any tires that are a low on air. You should also have your tires rotated every 5,000 to 10,000 miles, so that is also something to consider before your next road trip.

Engine Oil

It is imperative that your vehicle’s engine has the correct amount of fluid in order to function. Check the oil routinely to check where the oil levels are, as well as the color. Dark-colored oil (not including diesel engines) indicates it is time for a change. If you notice the levels are a little low, then head over to an auto shop to get them topped off before you hit the road.

Brakes

Anything that is off with your car’s brakes needs to be noted. Brakes that make a squealing sound any time you come to a stop could be problematic. Does your car pull to one side when you apply the brakes? Replacing any worn brake components is a good idea before a road trip, for safety’s sake.

Battery

Ending up on the side of the road with a dead battery is not a situation you want to find yourself in. You can get your battery tested fairly easily at most shops. This is good for seeing if your battery has a sufficient charge to take you where you need to go. Clean battery terminals and inspect overall battery condition.

Routine checkups will ensure your car continues to operate well. By handling a few preventative measures, you will be able to go on your road trip with the peace of mind that everything is working perfectly.
