If you’re itching to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, then a road trip may be just what you need. With just a little bit of planning, you can be on the road and headed towards one of Arizona’s coolest state parks: Kartchner Caverns. Whether you are traveling with friends or family, this stunning area is ideal for visitors of all ages. Before you hit the road, here are a few things you should know.
How to Get There
Driving to Kartchner Caverns is fairly quick, especially if you live in the Tucson area. It is located only 55 miles southeast of the city, near the town of Benson. If you are driving from the Phoenix area, it should only take about two and a half hours, mostly on Interstate 10. Make sure to stock up on snacks and supplies for your drive, as you probably won’t need to stop for much, other than for gas and bathroom breaks. Having what you need on hand can get you to your destination in a shorter amount of time.
What to Do
As the Kartchner Caverns offer up the world’s longest stalactites, it makes sense that you’d want to schedule a tour to see them. The state park offers several different tour options to choose from, ranging from an easier one-half mile walk to see some amazing formations to a more strenuous headlamp tour that is only offered on certain days. Keep in mind the age and ability of everyone in your group before you make reservations and get the tickets that you need to experience the underground treasures that Kartchner Caverns has to offer.
If you’re looking for an additional side trip while in the area, you can check out one of the other nearby state parks, such as Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park of Patagonia Lake State Park. For even more fun and to experience a piece of history, drive to Fort Huachuca to view this historical camp and national landmark established in 1877.
Where to Stay
There are plenty of lodging options near Kartchner Caverns State Park, including hotels in Tucson or Benson or camping and RV sites right at the park. It is best to make reservations ahead of time, as hotels and campgrounds can fill up fast, especially during the peak season.
