Arizona Emission Testing Requirements

With the increase in pollution and the negative effects it has had on the environment, government entities have put different requirements and restrictions in place to help improve air quality. One such governance is emission testing. Each state has its own requirements. Here are the requirements for the Arizona Emission Test that you should be aware of.

What Vehicles Must Be Tested?

Cars with a model year of 1967 or newer and are at least five years old must be tested. A test is required every one to two years, depending upon the age and weight of the vehicle.

Exemptions

Most vehicles do require a test every year, however, there are a few exemptions:

  • Out of area exemptions
  • Out of state exemptions
  • All electric cars
  • Motorcycles

To ensure that you comply with state regulations, it would be best to contact your local Department of Transportation to ensure that your vehicle is fully exempt.

Paperwork

If your car has been registered in the state of Arizona for some years, chances are that you will not have to complete any new paperwork. Previous tests are kept on file for several years. You may check for your vehicles testing history online.

On the other hand, if you just purchased your vehicle or have recently moved to the state, you will have to furnish your current title or registration, along with proof of address. You can check your local Department of Transportation website to verify proper forms of proof.

Testing

The Tailpipe Test is utilized to measure the emissions of older cars or vehicles produced before 2001. Vehicles that run on diesel fuel are tested for “smoke opacity,” or visual pollutants. The test must be paid for in cash. You will want to check a few things out on your car before taking it in to ensure that it will pass the emissions test. Should your car fail emissions, you will need to have it serviced by a technician. If you have your vehicle retested within 30 days of when it was first examined, the test is free. Once your vehicle passes, you can then officially register your car by submitting a copy of your vehicle’s passed emission test, your registration form, and any applicable fees.

The emissions test is put into place to not only protect the environment but to also protect drivers and pedestrians. Especially in a busy city like Phoenix, having these measures in place is a good way to protect the future health of our children; helps to increase growth by attracting new businesses and job creation.
