Store Spotlight: Keeping Glendale in Gear

Residents of Arizona know that the heat is nothing to take lightly, especially during the summer months. Soaring temperatures can be plenty tough on people, on pets, on plants – and don’t forget about your wheels. Cars and trucks are built to run on fluids and moving parts, many of which take a greater toll when it’s hot outside. At Sun Devil Auto, we’re very much aware of this reality, which is why we do all we can to help our fellow motorists, in the Southwest, remain extra diligent when it comes to maintaining their vehicles.

Beat the Heat

There’s a long list of reasons to consider Sun Devil Auto when you’re looking for professional maintenance or repair work on your vehicle. One of the biggest benefits is our familiarity with Arizona’s climate, which is considered among the most extreme in the country. We know what to look out for, what to expect, and how best to prepare, so you’re sure to drive off with the utmost confidence when you pay us a visit.

In addition to what we can do under the hood, we’re also your go-to source for professional auto glass repair and window tint services. Tinting is a good way to cut down on the solar heat gain filtering in through your windows, keeping your ride’s interior cooler all day long. It also has the ability to cut harmful exposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, offering you and your vehicle’s upholstery an added measure of protection that you’re sure to appreciate.

Don’t worry about durability, either. The products we install are made to stand up to Arizona’s harsh weather. Solar Gard brand films are designed to resist common issues such as peeling, bubbling and discoloration, so you can count on quality performance for the long haul. Our windshield replacements include a lifetime workmanship guarantee as well, and with complimentary mobile service available to most areas, there’s no need to drive home with a crack or chip in your glass.

Meet the Shop Manager

Any great team starts with a strong leader, and this one is no different. Today we’ll meet Josh Wahl, manager of Sun Devil Auto on West Thunderbird Road in Glendale, AZ. He’s been in the automotive game for over 14 years, and he’s seen plenty throughout his career. We asked him what it takes to run a top-quality service center, what got him into car repair and what drivers should know to avoid costly auto issues. Here’s what he had to say:

Question: How did you get your start?

Answer: I was a porter for a family-owned business similar to Sun Devil Auto. I later went to Universal Technical Institute for technical training.

Q: What’s your favorite auto repair to complete?

A: Any repair that can put my customers back on the street, that makes them safe, happy and return
to Sun Devil Auto for future repairs and preventative maintenance.

Q: What’s your favorite type of vehicle to make repairs on?

A: All vehicles are created equal to myself and my team. We’re always happy to help out our customers with any needs they may have on their vehicles.

Q: What are the qualities a Sun Devil Auto technician possesses?

A: We always work towards hiring the best qualified technicians in the industry. We pride ourselves in being helpful, friendly and hardworking. If you have a question, we’re happy to answer it for you to the best of our knowledge. If we don’t know the answer, we’ll gladly find out for you.

Q: What type of training do your technicians need to complete? What’s included in this training?

A: Our technicians have completed schooling through one of the many technical schools our industry has to offer. All of our technicians have also taken testing with ASE for special certifications. Our technicians are required to re-certify in the ASE test on a regular basis. Our industry is always evolving, and our technicians will continue to go to school to learn about upcoming automotive technical advances and ways to diagnose and repair the issues at hand.

Q: What’s the most commonly asked question you get about automotive repair?

A: The most common questions are “How long will the repair take?”  and “How much will it cost?”. Our service advisors are here to help with these questions and many more. We pride ourselves in being able to explain why a repair or service is needed and then building an accurate quote for the repair or service.

Q: If you could dismiss one myth about automotive maintenance/repair, what would that be?

A: All automotive facilities aren’t created equally. Sun Devil Auto is always here to help in any way possible. We’re all here to make sure our customers’ vehicles are repaired properly the first time and the customer leaves happy.

Q: What is your favorite part of the job, your favorite part about working for Sun Devil Auto?

A: Solving problems with vehicles that other repair facilities weren’t able to find or repair the first time. When an issue on a vehicle is found by one of our staff members, and the vehicle can then be repaired properly, this makes us very happy. The repair also results in a happy customer, and that also makes our team very happy.

Q: What’s the number one tip you would provide to car owners about maintaining their vehicles?

A: When having your vehicle engine oil and filter changes, it’s always best to have this service performed by a facility that lifts your vehicle. The reason that this is always suggested is that way the technician can perform a suspension, steering and under-vehicle inspection. Some quick lube places may miss safety related repairs that may be needed.

Great info. Thanks again for your time, Josh!

Prevent the Problems

Many drivers are aware that prevention is key when it comes to keeping your wheels on the road. By replacing worn-down components, you stand to keep your car’s major systems running more smoothly on every trip. You can also reduce the likelihood of real problems arising down the line, a recommended strategy to save you time, money and potential frustration in the future.

Every manufacturer recommends specific intervals for servicing certain components, including those within the exhaust system, suspension, transmission, and fuel system. It’s important to remember that these intervals can be affected by the actual conditions that your vehicle is driven in. Many of these parts must be inspected and/or replaced more often when operating primarily in what are deemed severe conditions, such as hot, dusty climates, and frequent stop-and-go city traffic.
