Great Phoenix Road Trips: The Best Valley Hiking Spots

Although the weather may get intense in the summer, the Phoenix area is actually full of some incredible hiking spots. Even with the heat, there are many times during the year that it is safe and perfectly enjoyable to head to the next trail and enjoy all that outdoor Arizona has to offer. And yes, it is full of much more than tumbleweeds and cactus. If you don’t believe it, take a look at this list of the best hiking spots you can find in the Grand Canyon state.

Superstition Mountains

If you travel East of Phoenix for about an hour, you will find the Superstition Mountains. This breathtaking area is full of gorgeous trails for seasoned hikers. The Siphon Draw Trailhead is one such trail that offers amazing views in just 2.5 miles.

Camelback Mountain

Camelback Mountain is located right at the edge of the city. The hike begins at Echo Canyon Trailhead and offers an intense yet rewarding climb in just 1.2 miles. Hike this trail early or later in the day to avoid the heat, but leave at least two hours of light for the entire trip.

Havasu Falls

This gem of the Grand Canyon is even more amazing in person than its photos depict. A permit is required for this hike, which takes place on the Havasupai Indian Reservation. You will need to hike eight miles into the village, two miles to the campground and an extra four miles to the falls.

Mount Kimball

Located at the edge of Tucson, Finger Rock Trail leads to Mount Kimball and the Catalina Mountains. The hike is fast and furious at just five miles, but it is worth the incredible views it offers at the top. If you love elevation gain, this trail is just right for you.

Mount Humphrey’s

To get to the top of the highest mountain in the state, try the Humphrey’s Summit Trail. It starts at a skiing area and takes five miles and about six hours. The views in the fall are breathtaking and worth every ounce of effort.
