Ignition

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Ignition system operating and timing control on late model cars are accomplished by the engine control computer. Various vehicle and engine operating conditions, including which cylinder is approaching power stroke and exactly where the crankshaft is in it rotation, are monitored by sensors which send their signals to the computer.

Ignition Maintenance Tips

  • Change spark plugs every 20,000 miles
  • Change wires every 30,000 miles
  • Change cap and rotor every 20,000 miles
  • Diagnostic scope every 20,000 miles

Heating, Ventilation & A/C Systems

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

The heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC) is controlled by the computer system. This system operates on the basis of receiving information from the sensors in various locations (INPUTS). When those conditions match the pre-program circumstances, the computer causes certain actuators to adjust accordingly (OUTPUTS).

Heating, Ventilation & A/C Systems Maintenance Tips

  • Check heater lines, belts and hoses every 20,000 miles. Replace if there is any sign of damage, leak or bubble, or if hoses feel soft and spongy. In any case, replace belts and hoses every 30,000 miles or 4 years.
  • Clean condenser and radiator fins every 20,000 miles
  • Check vacuum control lines every 20,000 miles

Exhaust System

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Even the simple exhaust system has not escaped control by the automotive computer. In addition to performing its traditional functions of directing hazardous gases safely away from the vehicle’s occupants and reducing exhaust noises to acceptable levels, it has become a primary component in reducing automotive emissions.

Exhaust System Maintenance Tips

  • Check for leaks in exhaust every 20,000 miles
  • Check hangers and exhaust system supports every 20,000 miles
  • When a catalytic converter fails, it is illegal to install a junkyard replacement

Cooling System

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Most late model cars use electrically driven cooling fans to replace the older mechanically driven fan. Learn about two of the underlying reasons in this diagram.

Cooling System Maintenance Tips

  • Inspect belts and hoses every 20,000 miles. Adjust belts if necessary
  • Replace belts and hoses every 30,000 miles or 4 years
  • Drain, flush and refill radiator every 20,000 miles
  • Clean radiator fins ever 20,000 miles

Charging System

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

The charging system on late model vehicles has demands far in excess of those required by older vehicles. Increased electrical demand through use of electrically operated components, decreased battery size and close voltage regulation have all impacted the charging system. Such close control falls to the computer system. It is accomplished by monitoring operating conditions and electrical demands. INPUTS (corresponding changes) are then made by the computer to the charging system’s voltage and amperage outputs through signals sent to the voltage regulation circuits and/or engine idle speed control OUTPUTS.

Charging System Maintenance Tips

  • Check battery cables, case and hold-downs, clean terminals, load test and check voltage every 20,000 miles
  • Check belts every 20,000 miles
  • Check battery fluid level every 10,000 miles (except maintenance-free batteries)
  • Replace belts every 30,000 miles

Conventional Brakes

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Have you ever wondered about the difference between ABS Brakes and Conventional Brakes? Check out the Conventional Brakes diagram below to find out!

Maintenance Tips for Conventional Brakes

  • Check brake fluid level every 10,000 miles
  • Check friction material every 10,000 miles
  • Check brake cables every 10,000 miles
  • Change brake fluid every 20,000 miles
  • When doing a complete brake job, refinish rotors and drums, replace brake pads or shoes, inspect, clean and repack wheel bearing and replace grease seal.
  • With a second brake job, replace calipers, wheel cylinders and brake hardware
  • Always replace pads with the same type of friction material (organic or semimetallic)
  • Replace brake drums or rotors if they are under minimum specifications

ABS Brakes

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Anti-lock brake systems (ABS), an excellent safety feature, are rapidly becoming standard on today’s automobiles. The ABS system consists of two subsystems:

  1. The hydraulic system, consisting of the master cylinder, calipers, wheel cylinders, pads, shoes and associated connecting valves, lines and hoses, as in a conventional brake system.
  2. The ABS controller (computer), its associated sensors (INPUTS), actuators (OUTPUTS), required wiring and connectors.

The computer receives signals from the individual wheel sensors regarding the speed of each wheel. It then compares the speed of each wheel with that of the others. If that comparison indicates wheel lockup is present, appropriate signals are sent to the various valves and actuators to raise or lower hydraulic pressure to the individual wheels to correct the skid. This action is repeated thousands of times per second, producing maximum stopping ability under all conditions. All of this activity goes unnoticed by the driver unless a component fault is detected by the computer and the “BRAKE” or “ABS” warning lights are illuminated on the dashboard.

Fuel System

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Fuel control can be divided into two elements: First, through a variety of electrically driven components, the hydraulic function of the system ensures that clean pressurized fuel is available at the injectors. The second element, fuel control, is accomplished by monitoring INPUT signals from sensors reflecting vehicle and engine operating conditions and driver demands. From this information the computer uses it program to compute how long to hold each injector open. This OUPUT is referred to as pulse width. The resulting combustion byproducts are monitored by the oxygen sensor. Using this INPUT as a correction, pulse width is recomputed for the next cylinder.

Fuel System Maintenance Tips

  • Chang fuel filter every 20,000 miles or 1 year
  • Clean idle passage every 20,000 miles
  • Clean throttle blades every 20,000 miles
  • Clean back of fuel distributor plate (primarily on German manufactured vehicles) every 20,000 miles
  • Check air temperature sensor at 10,000 miles
  • Check throttle bolt torque (if applicable) at 20,000 miles
  • Check fuel lines for signs of deterioration and cracking every 2 years or 20,000 miles
  • Change oxygen sensor every 30,000 miles
  • Clean fuel injectors every 30,000 miles
  • Change gas cap every 30,000 miles
