Subject: Sun Devil Auto Store Renovation Store Location #2 202 W. Van Buren St. Phoenix, AZ 85003
PROJECT BRIEF
SUN DEVIL AUTO MISSION STATEMENT Sun Devil Auto is an Arizona-grown, family-owned and operated auto repair company. We offer quality products & services at reasonable prices and guarantee all of our work in writing. We recognize that people have a choice when it comes to auto care and that’s why we strive to earn their business and pledge to do it right the first time. We are proud to be a member of the Better Business Bureau. There are 21 Sun Devil Auto locations in metropolitan Phoenix. Established in 1978, the company has successfully established an Arizona presence and recently has expanded into the NV and TX markets with 4 and 3 additional stores respectively. THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE + LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE brings together the expertise of architecture, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design, visual communication design, and environmental science.
CONCEPT
CALLING ASU DESIGN STUDENT TEAMS TO SUN DEVIL AUTO’S URBAN DESIGN CHALLENGE Have you ever watched a program on HGTV called Landscaper’s Challenge? The premise of the show is that there’s never just one way to architecturally design a yard. In every episode of Landscapers’ Challenge three pros face off and “take it outside” to find out whose plan will best meet the outdoor design challenge and win the homeowner’s approval. The winner installs the plan, and cameras document the process and the owner’s reaction. Sun Devil Auto would like to put a twist on it. One of our oldest stores is located at 202 W. Van Buren in downtown Phoenix. The building was built in 1931. They began construction in 1929 and completed it in 1931. It could use some “curb appeal”. We invite you to participate in Sun Devil Auto’s Urban Design Challenge. We’re looking for a retrospective design concept that effectively captures the Sun Devil Auto brand of the late 70’s, (home-grown, family-owned community, grassroots marketing) while also reflecting a more modern-day, sophisticated level of auto repair services that it offers: state-of-the art diagnostics, alternative to the dealership, “green” approach to recycling liquids, oil, etc. Successfully melding this design concept with Sun Devil Auto’s “vintage” 1931 location set in the urban arts district of downtown Phoenix will be the ultimate challenge!
